Starcraft 2 Overheating Bug Fixed with Few Lines of Code

Tags: blizzard game overheating starcraft 2

Starcraft 2 has been crippling some gamer's graphics cards, the culprit? Uncapped frame rates on selected screens. But never fear Blizzard are here with a few lines of code to fix the problem, we hope!

Are you suffering for a hot PC desktop, or even a totally fried graphics card, thanks to Blizzard's new Starcraft 2 game? We imagine many of you out there are, what with Starcraft being such a hugely anticipated and successful game, we're sure you're all putting in mad hours on it already.

But your computer may be in danger so listen up. The problem appears to stem from selected menu screens with uncapped frame rates in the game, allowing your graphics card to work it's butt off rendering scenes. This inevitably leading to the overheating and death of your beloved card, which no doubt cost a lot more than Starcraft 2 did.

So here's the fix straight from Blizzard themselves:

Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly. A temporary workaround is to go to your DocumentsStarCraft II Betavariables.txt file and add these lines:

frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

You may replace these numbers if you want to.

Good luck with fixing you issues and we hope it sorts everything out for you all.

Squeak
Stupid Blizzard caused my new GTX480 to fry because of this. Now what are they going to do for people who had their GPUs fried due to this small issue? Replaced my GTX480 with a Sapphire HD5970 instead. The only problem is: I want my refund.
