A Real Difference in Five Months.

My partner has been living here for about five months, and I’ve seen a real difference in her. The staff help with her personal care and everyday needs, but they also bring plenty of warmth and good humor. She enjoys their company, and honestly, so do I. They’re friendly, respectful, and always make sure she’s comfortable without taking away her dignity or independence. It feels like they care about her as a person, not just a resident. I’d happily recommend this home to other families.

Five months in, Dad is more himself than I expected.

My father Walter is 86, a retired fire captain who'd rather be fishing or listening to a Cubs game than accept help with anything. That's what made this decision so hard. He needed medication management, supervision, and help with bathing and dressing, but he's spent his whole life being the one who looked after everyone else. We also live nearly two hours away, so I worried I'd end up piecing things together from a distance. The move went better than I feared. Before he arrived, his room was set up with his fishing photographs, his old fire-service helmet, and a radio for the ballgames. We'd written down his usual morning routine, and the staff actually used it. Early on, one of his morning caregivers noticed he did better when she offered him two shirts to choose from instead of telling him what to wear. It sounds like a small thing, but it made a real difference. He stopped fighting the morning care, and he started leaving his apartment more, spending time in the quieter common areas instead of shutting himself in. He prefers the home-like dining room and the smaller spaces to the big group activities, and nobody pushes him on that. The one real frustration has been communication between shifts. Information didn't always carry over, and I sometimes had to follow up twice for a weekend update. We asked for one primary contact and a set weekly call, which helped a lot. My advice to other families is to ask exactly how information is shared between shifts and to agree on one point of contact from the start. Five months in, Dad seems more like himself than I expected, and that's what matters most to me.

Great caregivers.

The caregivers at 1019 Belle’s Place of Crawfordsville have been wonderful with my mother. They’re kind, attentive, and take the time to understand what she needs. I can see that they genuinely care about her, and I’m very grateful for everything they do. I would gladly recommend Belle’s Place to other families.

Helping mom stay herself.

My mother, Joanne, has lived at 1019 Belle’s Place of Crawfordsville for eleven months. Before moving, her Alzheimer’s had progressed to nighttime wandering, missed medication, and difficulty dressing. Choosing memory care was necessary, but trusting other people with someone so independent and full of life was still hard. Mom directed community theater for years and remembers every song from the productions she staged. We worried a secure setting would make her feel confined or cause that lively part of her to disappear. We decorated her apartment with playbills, costume photos, and her portable radio. We also shared a short history of her theater years with the caregivers. One evening, when Mom became restless, a caregiver played songs from one of her favorite musicals and asked her to help arrange programs for an activity. It gave her something familiar and purposeful to do. At first, she refused several group activities because she believed she was supposed to be directing them. Rather than correcting or rushing her, staff began offering her small roles. She’s since become less withdrawn and now sings along during musical activities. I appreciate the patient prompting with dressing, medication, and daily routines, along with regular calls about changes in her sleep, appetite, and participation. The dining service, therapeutic activities, housekeeping, and comfortable common spaces also make daily life easier. My advice to another family is to bring photographs and objects that show who your loved one was before dementia. Those details can help caregivers form a real connection.
